Stainless Steel CNC Plasma Cutting Machine
A plasma cutting is a great solution for cutting stainless steel. It is a relatively fast process and tends to be a more affordable method. There are a variety of plasma systems to select from to produce optimal results depending on your needs.
A stainless steel plasma cutting machine is a device that uses a high-velocity jet of ionized gas, or plasma, to cut through stainless steel and other conductive materials. The plasma is created by an electrical arc that passes through a gas, such as nitrogen or argon, turning it into a plasma state. This high-energy plasma is then directed through a nozzle, where it cuts through the metal with precision.
Now that you’ve selected a plasma cutter for your stainless steel cutting, let’s decide which gas to use when making your cut.
Benefits of Using Plasma Cutting for Stainless Steel
- Precision and clean cuts – stainless steel often requires high levels of accuracy, and plasma cutters can deliver clean and precise cuts for every manufacturing project.
- Faster cutting speeds compared to traditional methods – Plasma cutters are also noticeably fast, especially when it comes to potentially difficult raw materials like thick sheets of stainless steel.
- Lower heat-affected zones Reduced heat-affected zones mean that the need for finishing processes after the material is cut is then reduced, as the cuts come out cleaner and more precise, with more of the raw material being utilized in every project.
- Reduced room for human error – The modern CNC plasma cutting machines require little human involvement once the process begins.
- Versatility – With a top-notch plasma cutting machine, manufacturers can expand their operations and create complex shapes and patterns onto stainless steel workpieces of varying thicknesses.
- The Transformative potential for stainless steel – Plasma cutting is a blend of science and art, which means that manufacturers that want to expand their output or enhance their products have limitless options.

CNC Plasma Cutting Machine Buyer Guide
The type of gas used for plasma cutting is one of the primary factors in determining the cut quality and edge finish of the stainless steel plate. Ideally, a high-definition dual-gas plasma cutting system will deliver the best results, however, a single gas system also works.
Single Gas Cutting
- Air: Depending on the amperage rating of the cutting system, you can use compressed air to cut stainless steel up to about 25mm (2”). A large amount of nitrogen present in air, however, will result in a blackening of the cut edge. Oxygen may also increase the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and degrade edge quality as well.
- Oxygen (O2): Oxygen may be used to cut stainless steel, but is a less than ideal option as it will cause degradation in edge quality and a larger heat-affected zone (HAZ).
- Nitrogen (N2): Nitrogen delivers increased cut speed and produces a smoother cut surface but may increase top edge rounding and angularity.
Dual Gas Cutting (Recommended)
- Nitrogen (N2) – Water: Sometimes referred to as Water Mist Secondary (WMS), dual gas cutting with nitrogen and water is economical, produces a clean top edge, and gives a straw-colored cut edge finish. It does, however, necessitate the use of a water table.
- Hydrogen/Nitrogen (F5) – Nitrogen (N2): This combination produces superior angularity but can only cut material up to about 3/8” in thickness.
- Hydrogen/Argon (H35) – Nitrogen (N2): This gas pairing will provide a square cut edge with a varying color on thicker material but H35 is not readily available in all markets and excessive dross may result on thin plate.
Stainless steel is unique in that it is divided into families and grades that describe specific properties such as toughness, corrosion resistance, and composition. There are four stainless steel families in all. For purposes of this article, we will only focus on the austenitic family as it is the most popular and widely used family thanks to its excellent weldability.
Within the austenitic steel family, 304 is the most popular grade worldwide, followed by 316. This is important to know because the data in most plasma cut charts are designed for 304 and 316 grade stainless steel. It is possible to use a grade other than 304 or 316, however, small adjustments will often be needed to prevent dross and a rough-cut edge.

6、 Fast speed, high accuracy
Stainless steel is a much tougher material than mild steel. It absorbs more energy during the cutting process and therefore produces much more heat. This means cutting stainless steel is harder. Still as this article has shown, it is entirely possible to plasma cut stainless steel and produce parts with good, and even excellent, cut quality. To increase your chance of success, you should keep the following in mind.
- Always begin with the cut settings found in your owner’s manual, understanding that small adjustments may be necessary, especially when cutting less popular grades of stainless.
- Unlike mild steel dross, which is easy to remove, plasma cut stainless steel dross is difficult to remove. You therefore want to avoid the accumulation of dross as much as possible by maintaining a constant torch speed. Ensure the motion capabilities of your cutting table are adequate.
- When piercing stainless steel, the amount of slag (melted metal pooled on the surface of the workpiece) is much greater than the slag produced when cutting mild steel. The use of a longer and straight (as opposed to curved) lead-in can help. You may also need to increase your pierce height.
- To ensure you completely cut parts and are not left with a tab, slow down at the end of a cut so the arc has a chance to catch up and complete the part.
